Unitary playground surfacing
About the theme of "Unitary playground surfacing"
Unitary playground surfacing refers to a seamless, continuous surface layer, usually made from rubber or synthetic materials, designed to cushion falls
and provide a safe, resilient environment for children.
Unlike traditional wood chips or sand, unitary surfaces are smooth, colorful,
and low-maintenance, allowing for accessible, inclusive play spaces.
This type of surfacing enhances safety while inviting exploration and creative play through vibrant, visually stimulating colors and textures.
I explore the concept of unitary playground surfacing, drawing inspiration
from my time spent at playgrounds with my two-year-old daughter.
Using color tapes on paper, I create layers that reflect these surfaces' simplicity, structure, and dynamic energy.
Bright green hues dominate this series, representing the lively energy
of play and the safety inherent in these spaces.
These green tones evoke a sense of vitality, joy, and freedom young children feel as they explore and connect with the world around them.
Through these vivid greens, I aim to convey emotions of growth, resilience, and almost boundless optimism, as seen through
a child’s eyes.
