Perceptual Maps
Mixed-media abstract art series
2022
Perceptual Maps in 2022 is an abstract mixed media art series by Philippe Halaburda that investigates how perception, memory, and space interact through visual form.
Drawing on psychogeographical ideas about the interplay of environment, emotion, and movement, this body of work uses layered materials and structured compositions to map psychological experience onto surface and structure.
+ Drifting Maps: 2022 Series Overview
• Studio: Newburgh, NY
• 51 series: canvas, paper,
and sculpture
The Perceptual Maps series was created through a combination of acrylic paint, collage, and intentional mark-making. Each work reflects a distinct engagement with spatial logic, perceptual drift, and cognitive navigation. Rather than depicting literal landscapes, the series visualizes mental and emotional environments using geometry, repetition, and layered surfaces.
Concept & theme
All the artworks from Perceptual Maps in 2022 series were created through layered acrylic paint, collage, and refined mark-making to build depth, rhythm, and textural nuance.
Structure and repetition serve as tools for conveying shifts in perception and navigational logic.
The material layering reflects an interest in memory, continuity, and the shifting experience of space.

Materials & process
These artworks extend Halaburda’s ongoing exploration of psychogeography as a conceptual framework for mapping emotional and cognitive experience.
By abstractly translating perceptual processes into visual systems, Perceptual Maps invites viewers to engage with tension, continuity, and spatial relationships, making internal experience visible through form.
Studio & context
The Cognitive Gridlocks series was developed in the studio as part of an ongoing investigation into emotional mapping and geographic abstraction.
The works are intended for exhibition, acquisition,
and institutional dialogue within contemporary abstract art contexts.

In exploring sentience through abstract topography, I employ geometric compositions to convey the multidimensional nature
of subjective experience.
I aim to capture the depth and complexity of awareness that characterizes sentience through the strategic arrangement
of geometric shapes, lines, and patterns. Each element within the composition symbolizes different facets of consciousness, from self-awareness to empathy and understanding of others.
By manipulating geometric forms and structures, I create visual metaphors for the intricate interplay between internal and external stimuli that shape our subjective experience of the world.
The geometric compositions serve as a canvas for exploring the dynamic relationship between the individual and their environment, highlighting the interconnectedness of thoughts, emotions, and perceptions.
Through this artistic approach, I seek to evoke contemplation
and introspection, inviting viewers to reflect on the profound depths
of human consciousness and the enigmatic nature of sentience.
