Dérive: drifting maps

The 2024 body of work "Dérive' is the throughline connecting every series made in 2024,
an intentional drift through space and form, foregrounding emotional response over predetermined routes rather than a fixed destination.
The Off-Grid Living, Neuroarchitecture, and the year's other series each approach that drift from a different angle, translated through mark-making, geometry, and material layering across canvas, paper, and LEGO bricks.

Concept & artistic process
Situationist dérive was originally a form of urban wandering, letting emotional and psychological responses guide movement rather than a map or a destination.
I use the same logic in reverse: instead of drifting through
a real place, I drift through form itself, letting geometry and material accumulate the way a memory does, imprecisely, in layers, sometimes contradicting the layer before it.
The architecture-adjacent quality in some of these pieces isn't a stylistic choice; it's what happens when you try to give an internal state something to structurally lean on.
Materials & process
My emotional state during the making of each piece directly shapes it; the overlapping geometric planes aren't planned in advance so much as accumulated, the way memory layers rather than replaces.
That accumulation is deliberate: each piece functions
like a mental space with its own internal logic, closer to architecture than illustration.
Studio & context
The Dérive - drifting maps series was developed in the studio as part of an ongoing investigation into emotional mapping and geographic abstraction.

and institutional dialogue within contemporary abstract art contexts.
