Mixed-media abstract art series
2021
Cognitive Gridlocks is a 2025 mixed-media abstract art series by Philippe Halaburda that investigates moments when thought, emotion, and movement become caught, cyclical, or resistant.
Through layered paint, collage, and mark-making, these works visualize states of mental friction and structural constraint, translating psychological pressure into form and spatial systems.
All these series reflect a broader inquiry into how internal tension and cognitive overload manifest as visual patterns, rhythm, and interruption on canvas and paper.
+ Drifting Maps: 2021 Series Overview
• Studio: Newburgh, NY
• 51 series: canvas, paper,
and sculpture
The Perceptual Maps series was created through a combination of acrylic paint, collage, and intentional mark-making. Each work reflects a distinct engagement with spatial logic, perceptual drift, and cognitive navigation. Rather than depicting literal landscapes, the series visualizes mental and emotional environments using geometry, repetition, and layered surfaces.
In my exploration of deconstructing urbanscapes, I employ a methodical approach to create abstract topographies that mirror the complexity of urban environments.
Through dense geometric compositions reminiscent of cartography, I break down the layers of urban landscapes into fundamental elements, such as streets, buildings, and landmarks.
Each geometric shape and line represents a specific component
of the urbanscape, allowing viewers to navigate the intricate web
of city structures and spaces. To achieve this, I combine geometric shapes, lines, and patterns to construct intricate compositions that capture the essence of urban environments.
By layering these elements and manipulating their arrangement,
I create abstract maps that convey the interconnectedness of urban structures and the dynamic flow of city life. Through this process
of deconstruction and abstraction, I aim to challenge conventional perceptions of urbanscapes and invite viewers to explore the underlying patterns and structures that shape our urban experience.
