Abstract paintings on canvas
Perceptual map art
Philippe Halaburda — 2021 — Newburgh, NY
In 2021, the practice expanded its material language beyond tape and acrylic to include thread, tulle, and fabric, bringing volume, texture, and three-dimensional presence to psychogeographical mapping.
Three series investigate the relationship between the self and the world: through Cubist fragmentation, through the interplay of connected threads, and through the urgent need to protect natural systems at their greatest vulnerability.
All works are mixed media on square canvas. Available to collectors, galleries, and institutions.
Artistic process
and emotional structure
The 2021 practice marks the first major material expansion
of the psychogeographical mapping practice.
Thread and tulle join acrylic and tape as primary materials—introducing three-dimensionality to the canvas surface and replacing tape's flat graphic logic with something more fragile, more relational, more alive.
The Interplay series develops this direction furthest: fabric stretched
across the canvas plane, connecting points like a nervous system or a root network, making the invisible visible through material fact.
The I am a Cubist series returns to geometric fragmentation as a perceptual tool — the Cubist tradition revisited through the lens of psychogeographical mapping.
Together, these three series expand the visual vocabulary that would carry forward into the increasingly complex material systems of 2022 and beyond.
Statement
in 2021
Color codes and graphic symbols, applied through tape, thread, and found materials, lead the viewer through intersecting emotional landscapes that challenge conventional boundaries of experience.
The aim is not to depict an emotion but to map its structure: to translate the complex, subconscious terrain of feeling into something navigable, something you can enter and move through.
The absence of recognizable landscape is deliberate.
What remains is the emotional territory itself, immersive, layered, and entirely its own.
